ShareDeen is pleased to announce Islamic Online University scholarships for B.A Islamic Studies course

IOU BAIS Course

From the 1st of April, 2010 the Islamic Online University (IOU) launched the world’s first tuition-free, Bachelor of Arts in Islamic Studies in English completely online. This is seen as a major new step towards helping Muslims across the globe fulfill the Prophet’s command to seek knowledge of the religion and correct their understanding of its tenets.

The program has recorded audio and video lectures and weekly live tutorial classes in a virtual classroom setting on the net and its syllabus is based on the BA in Usool ud-Deen (Religious Foundations) curriculums of Madeenah University, Saudi Arabia, Omdurman Islamic University, Sudan, Al-Azhar in Egypt and other similar reputable Islamic institutions. Six subjects are offered each semester. Each semester is 5 months, having an online mid-term exam after two and a half months and a supervised final online at the end of the fifth month. Students are free to access their classes whenever it is convenient for them, however assignments have to be turned in and exams (mid-term and finals) have to be taken at fixed times.

There are no fees for the courses. However, there is a fixed symbolic registration fee and examination fee each semester which is calculated on a sliding scale (from $20 to $60) depending on the student’s country of residence.

NOTES FOR APPLICANTS OF SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants must apply for a scholarship before begining of the spring or fall semester of IOU BAIS programme. New students to BAIS course must register here along with registering at IOU.

To be considered for a scholarship, applicants should:

1. be a NEW student joining IOU from next semester.
2. be confirmed and accepted for the BAIS course at Islamic Online University.
3. be studying at least 6 subjects excluding any waivers or electives per semester henceforth. The student will be required to maintain grade of 70% and above in all the subjects.
4. have completed at least 3 free diploma courses at Islamic Online University. This condition may be waived if the student can get a recommendation letter from local Imam or head of local Islamic center or renowned Shaikh or Daee along with passing of one free diploma course at IOU.
5. be unable to afford the fees of BAIS course at Islamic Online University. The IOU has a sliding scale of fees depending upon the country of residence. For more details look at http://bais.islamiconlineuniversity.com/enrollment.php
6. not be getting any other scholarships when he/she is applying for ShareDeen scholarships.

IMPORTANT

Please ensure all the details provided below are accurate and similar to what you have provided in IOU while registering. Use the same email id that you have used to register at IOU.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SCHOLARSHIP
The following are the terms and conditions for this scholarship:

1. The student must comply with the requirements mentioned above.
2. The student must take up minimum of 6 subjects per semester excluding any waivers or electives henceforth.
3. The student must maintain a grade of 70% and above in all the subjects throughout the degree course henceforth failing to do so will lead to scholarship withdrawal.
4. The student must inform scholarship@sharedeen.com immediately if the requirements for this scholarship is not met in the current or subsequent semesters.
5. The student must inform scholarship@sharedeen.com in case of any situation that leads to any alteration in the course or dropping out of the course.
6. The student must share his progress with ShareDeen regularly throughout all semesters.
7. ShareDeen will review each applicant carefully and will take the decision about who are selected.
8. ShareDeen takes the responsibility of not sharing the selected students details/progress with any organization or other students. However, please note ShareDeen may interact with IOU to get the required details related to student registration and progress.
9. ShareDeen will offer 100% scholarship to selected students. The semester fees will be paid directly by ShareDeen before the session starts. The payment slip will be forwarded to the student that can be sent to IOU.

There is nothing wrong with sighting the moon by means of modern instruments

The shar’i evidence indicates that people should not go to great lengths to sight the moon with these instruments; rather it is sufficient to sight it with their eyes. But if a person seeks the moon with them and is certain that he has seen it by means of them after the sun has set, and he is a Muslim of good character, then I do not know of any reason why his sighting of the moon should not be followed, because it is still a visual sighting and is not calculation. Laylat al-Nusf min Sha’baan (the middle of Sha’baan)

Praise be to Allaah.

There is no saheeh marfoo’ report that speaks of the virtue of the middle of Sha’baan that may be followed, not even in the chapters on al-Fadaa’il (chapters on virtues in books of hadeeth etc.). Some maqtoo’ reports (reports whose isnaads do not go back further than the Taabi’een) have been narrated from some of the Taabi’een, and there are some ahaadeeth, the best of which are mawdoo’ (fabricated) or da’eef jiddan (very weak). These reports became very well known in some countries which were overwhelmed by ignorance; these reports suggest that people’s lifespans are written on that day or that it is decided on that day who is to die in the coming year. On this basis, it is not prescribed to spend this night in prayer or to fast on this day, or to single it out for certain acts of worship. One should not be deceived by the large numbers of ignorant people who do these things. And Allaah knows best.

If a person wants to pray qiyaam on this night as he does on other nights – without doing anything extra or singling this night out for anything – then that is OK. The same applies if he fasts the day of the fifteenth of Sha’baan because it happens to be one of the ayyaam al-beed, along with the fourteenth and thirteenth of the month, or because it happens to be a Monday or Thursday. If the fifteenth (of Sha’baan) coincides with a Monday or Thursday, there is nothing wrong with that (fasting on that day), so long as he is not seeking extra reward that has not been proven (in the saheeh texts). And Allaah knows best.

Friday Naseehah: 5 Jumu’ah khutbah

Conditions, essential parts and Sunnahs of Jumu’ah khutbahs

Praise be to Allaah.

Firstly:

The fuqaha’ of the four madhhabs are agreed that the khutbah is a condition of the Friday prayer being valid, and it is part of the remembrance of Allaah that Allaah has enjoined in His words (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe (Muslims)! When the call is proclaimed for the Salaah (prayer) on Friday (Jumu‘ah prayer), come to the remembrance of Allaah [Jumu‘ah religious talk (Khutbah) and Salaah (prayer)] and leave off business (and every other thing)”

[al-Jumu’ah 62:9].

The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) persisted in doing this; in fact it is narrated from some of the Companions that the khutbah is a replacement for two rak’ahs of Zuhr prayer. All of that indicates that the khutbah is an essential condition for the Friday prayer being valid.

Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

To sum up, the khutbah is a condition of Jumu’ah, and it is not valid without it, as was stated by ‘Ata’, al-Nakha’i, Qataadah, al-Thawri, al-Shaafa’i, Ishaaq, Abu Thawr and ashaab al-ra’i. And we do not know of anyone who disagreed with that except al-Hasan. End quote.

Secondly:

Conditions of the Friday khutbah

The fuqaha’ are also agreed on two of the conditions of the Friday khutbah:

1. That it should be done after the beginning of the time for Friday prayer.

2. That it should be done before the prayer and not after. Al-Khateeb al-Sharbeeni said: according to consensus, except for those who held odd opinions. Mughni al-Muhtaaj, 1/549. There should not be a lengthy interval between the two, rather the prayer should come immediately after the khutbah. Ibn Qudaamah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: It is essential that the prayer come immediately after the khutbah. End quote. Al-Mughni, 2/79.

The scholars differed concerning other conditions. We will mention briefly that which we believe is most likely to be conditions after having studied the evidence of all opinions:

3. The intention (niyyah). That is because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “Actions are but by intentions.” Agreed upon. So it is stipulated that the khateeb should have the intention of presenting a khutbah that is acceptable and valid for Friday prayer. This is the view of the Hanbalis and some of the Shaafa’is.

4. It should be spoken out loud. It is not acceptable for the khateeb to give a khutbah silently, because the aims of the khutbah cannot be achieved unless it is given out loud. This is the view of the majority of scholars, apart from the Hanafis.

Some of the scholars have stipulated that a specific number of people must attend the Friday khutbah, and some of them stipulated that the khutbah should be in Arabic, but we have explained previously on our website that these two conditions are not valid. See the answer to question no. 7718 and 112041.

Thirdly:

Essential part of the Friday khutbah

The correct scholarly view is that the only essential part of the Friday khutbah is the minimum to which the word khutbah may be applied according to custom. This is the view of Ibn Hazm. Al-Muhalla, 5/97,

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

It is not sufficient in the khutbah to discourage people from being attached to worldly matters and to remind them of death, rather it is essential to give what may be called a khutbah according to custom, and that cannot be achieved by means of an abbreviated speech that fails to fulfil the purpose. End quote.

Al-Ikhtiyaaraat, p. 79

Shaykh ‘Abd al-Rahmaan al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:

The fuqaha’s stipulation of the four essential parts in each of the two khutbahs is subject to further discussion. If the speaker does in each of the two khutbahs that which fulfils the purpose of the khutbah, which is exhortation that moves the heart, then he has done the khutbah. But undoubtedly praise of Allaah, blessings upon the Messenger of Allaah (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) and recitation of some Qur’aan are all things which complete and adorn the khutbah. End quote.

Al-Fataawa al-Sa’diyyah, p. 193

The khateeb should be pure and free of impurities both minor and major, and he should wear his best clothes, greet the people with salaam and deliver the khutbah from the minbar. He should turn to face the people and he should be sincere in exhorting and reminding the people in clear and eloquent words. He should keep the khutbah short and not make it lengthy, and he should make it into two khutbahs.

There are differences of opinion with regard to many of these minor issues, the details of which are discussed elsewhere. But here we have limited it to an overall discussion of that which all the Muslims need to know.

However we should point out here the importance of paying attention to the people's situation with regard to what the khutbah should contain. The khateeb should give them what they need and not talk to them about things that they cannot understand or that they do not need to know of religious issues.

Moreover he should not differ from what people are used to in their khutbahs of remembrance of Allaah, supplication or other things that are mustahabb in the khutbah, and for which there is no evidence that they are essential in the khutbah. It is sufficient for there to be evidence that they are mustahabb or even allowed for him to do them. And he should pay attention to the people's situation and needs.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, after discussing what the Hanbali fuqaha’ regard as essential in the Friday khutbah:

Some of the scholars said that the basic condition of the khutbah is that it should contain exhortation that softens the hearts and is beneficial to the people present, and that praising Allaah, sending blessings upon the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) and reciting a verse are all part of perfecting the khutbah.

But this opinion, although it carries some weight, need not be followed if the people of this city follow the first view which the author mentioned above, because if he omits these conditions which the author has mentioned, the people will become confused and everyone will leave Jumu’ah feeling that he has not prayed Jumu’ah, but if you fulfil these conditions you will not be doing anything haraam.

Paying attention to the people with regard to any matter that is not haraam is the way of sharee’ah. The Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) paid attention to his Companions with regard to fasting and not fasting in Ramadan when travelling, and he paid attention to them with regard to the rebuilding of the Ka’bah, when he said to ‘Aa’ishah: “Were it not that your people are still new in Islam, I would have demolished the Ka’bah and rebuilt it on the foundations of Ibraaheem.” [Agreed upon] This principle is well known in sharee’ah.

But if you go along with them with regard to something that is haraam, this is called compromise and it is not permissible. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “They wish that you should compromise (in religion out of courtesy) with them, so they (too) would compromise with you” [al-Qalam 68:9].

Celebrating the night of the Isra’ and Mi’raaj

What is the ruling on Celebrating the night of the Isra’ and Mi’raaj, which is the twenty-seventh night of Rajab?.

Praise be to Allaah.

There is no doubt that the Isra’ and Mi’raaj (the Prophet’s Night Journey and Ascent into heaven) are two great signs of Allaah which point to the truthfulness of the His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), and the greatness of his status before Allaah. They are also signs of the great power of Allaah, and of His exalted position above His creation. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Glorified (and Exalted) be He (Allaah) [above all that (evil) they associate with Him]

Who took His slave (Muhammad) for a journey by night from Al‑Masjid Al‑Haraam (at Makkah) to Al‑Masjid Al‑Aqsa (in Jerusalem), the neighbourhood whereof We have blessed, in order that We might show him (Muhammad) of Our Ayaat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, etc.). Verily, He is the All‑Hearer, the All‑Seer”

[al-Isra’ 17:1]

There are mutawaatir reports from the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that he was taken up into the heavens, and their gates were opened for him, until he passed beyond the seventh heaven, where his Lord spoke to him as He willed, and enjoined the five daily prayers upon him. At first Allaah, may He be exalted, enjoined fifty prayers, but our Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) kept going back and asking Him to reduce it, until He made them five, so they are five obligatory prayers but fifty in reward, because each good deed is rewarded tenfold. To Allaah be praise and thanks for all His blessings.

With regard to this night on which the Isra’ and Mi’raaj took place, there is nothing in the saheeh ahaadeeth to indicate that it is in Rajab or in any other month. Everything that has been narrated concerning a specific date for these events cannot be proven to have come from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) according to the scholars of hadeeth. Allaah has wise reasons for causing the people to forget it. Even if the date were proven, it would not be permissible for the Muslims to single it out for particular acts of worship, and it is not permissible for them to celebrate it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions (may Allaah be pleased with them) did not celebrate it and they did not single it out in any way. If celebrating it was something that is prescribed in Islam, the Messenger would have told his ummah about that, either in word or in deed. If any such thing had happened, it would have been well known, and his companions would have transmitted the information to us. They narrated from their Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) everything that his ummah needs to know, and they did not neglect any aspect of the religion, rather they were the first ones to do anything good. If celebrating this night had been prescribed in Islam, they would have been the first people to do so. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was the most sincere of people, and he conveyed the message to the people in full, and he fulfilled the trust. If venerating and celebrating this night were part of the religion of Allaah, then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would have done that and would not have concealed it. Since no such thing happened, it is known that celebrating it and venerating it is not part of Islam at all. Allaah has perfected this ummah’s religion for it and has completed His favour upon them, and He condemns those who introduce things into the religion which Allaah has not ordained. Allaah says in His holy Book, in Soorat al-Maa’idah (interpretation of the meaning):

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”

[al-Maa’idah 5:3]

And Allaah says in Soorat al-Shoora (interpretation of the meaning):

“Or have they partners with Allaah (false gods) who have instituted for them a religion which Allaah has not ordained?”

[al-Shoora 42:21]

In the saheeh ahaadeeth it is proven that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned against bid’ah (innovation) and stated clearly that it is misguidance, so as to show the ummah how serious the matter is and put them off it.

For example, it is narrated in al-Saheehayn from ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever introduces anything into this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.” In a report narrated by Muslim it says: “Whoever does any action that is not part of this matter of ours will have it rejected.”

In Saheeh Muslim it is narrated that Jaabir (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to say in his khutbah on Friday: “The best of speech is the Book of Allaah and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). The worst of matters are those which are newly-invented, and every innovation is a going astray.” Al-Nasaa’i added with a jayyid isnaad: “and every going astray will be in the Fire.”

In al-Sunan it is narrated that al-‘Irbaad ibn Saariyah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) delivered an eloquent speech to us which melted our hearts and caused our eyes to flow with tears. We said: O Messenger of Allaah, it is as if it is a farewell address, so advise us. He said: “I advise you to fear Allaah, and to listen and obey, even if a slave is appointed over you. Whoever among you lives will see many differences, so I urge you to adhere to my Sunnah and the way of the rightly-guided caliphs who will come after me, and cling firmly to it. Beware of newly-invented matters, for every newly-invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a going astray. And there are many ahaadeeth with a similar meaning.

Warnings against bid’ah (innovation) have been narrated from the companions of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and from the righteous salaf after them, because this is no more than adding things to the religion and instituting a religion that Allaah has not ordained, and it is an imitation of the enemies of Allaah, the Jews and the Christians, in their additions to their religions and introducing into them things that Allaah had not ordained. It also implies that there is something lacking in Islam, and that it is not complete, and it is well known that this leads to great mischief and evil, and goes against the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favour upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion”

[al-Maa’idah 5:3]

It also goes against the ahaadeeth of the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) which warn against innovation (bid’ah).

I hope that the evidence we have quoted will be sufficient to convince the seeker of truth that this bid’ah is wrong, i.e., the innovation of celebrating the night of the Isra’ and Mi’raaj, and that it is not part of the religion of Islam at all.

Because Allaah has enjoined being sincere towards the Muslims and explaining what Allaah has prescribed for them in their religion, and because it is haraam to conceal knowledge, I thought that I should point out this innovation, which is so widespread in many regions that people think it is part of the religion, to my Muslim brothers. Allaah is the One Whom we ask to set the affairs of all the Muslims straight, and to bless them with knowledge of Islam, and to help us and them to adhere steadfastly to the truth, and to forsake everything that goes against it, for He is able to do that. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon His slave and Messenger, our Prophet Muhammad, and his family and companions.

Friday Naseehah: 4 Virtues of Friday.

Praise be to Allaah.

Friday has many distinguishing features and virtues that Allaah has bestowed upon this day and not others.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah and Hudhayfah (may Allaah be pleased with them) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah led those who came before us away from Friday. The Jews had Saturday, and the Christians had Sunday. Then Allaah brought us and Allaah guided us to Friday. So there is Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and thus they will follow us on the Day of Resurrection. We are the last of the people of this world but we will be the first on the Day of Resurrection, and we will be dealt with before all others.”

Al-Nawawi said:

Al-Qaadi said: The apparent meaning is that it was obligatory for them to venerate Friday but this was not stated clearly; the matter was left to their own reasoning… But they did not manage to work it out and Allaah did not guide them to it. It was enjoined clearly upon this ummah, and was not left to their own reasoning, thus they were blessed with it … It was narrated that Moosa enjoined Friday upon them and told them of its virtues, but they disputed with him and argued that Saturday was better, and it was said to him, ‘Let them be.’ Al-Qaadi said: if there had been a clear command, their arguing with him would not have been valid, rather it would have been said to him that they were going against the command. I say: it may be that that was clearly enjoined upon them but they disputed as to whether it was something they had to adhere to or they could change it to another day; they decided to change it to another day and they erred greatly thereby.

It comes as no surprise that Friday was specifically enjoined upon them and they went against that.

Al-Haafiz said: How can it be otherwise when they are the ones who said “We hear and we disobey”?

It was narrated from Aws ibn Aws that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best of your days is Friday. On that day Adam (peace be upon him) was created; on that day he died; on that day the Trumpet will be blown and on that day all of creation will swoon. So send a great deal of blessings upon me, for your blessings will be shown to me.” They said, “O Messenger of Allaah, how will our blessings upon you be shown to you when you have turned to dust?” He said, “Allaah has forbidden the earth to consume the bodies of the Prophets, peace be upon them.”

Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1047; classed as saheeh by Ibn al-Qayyim in his comments on Sunan Abi Dawood, 4/273; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Abi Dawood, 925.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best day on which the sun rises is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he was admitted to Paradise and on it he was expelled therefrom.”

Narrated by Muslim, 1410.

This hadeeth includes some of the reasons why Friday is regarded as special.

Al-Nawawi said:

Al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad said: The apparent meaning is that these virtues do not mean that Friday is regarded as special because Adam was expelled on a Friday and the Hour will begin on a Friday. Rather it is meant to explain what momentous events took place and will take place on this day, so that people will make the most of this day to do righteous deeds, so as to attain the mercy of Allaah and ward off His punishment. This is the view of al-Qaadi. Abu Bakr ibn al-‘Arabi said in his book al-Ahwadhi fi Sharh al-Tirmidhi: All of these events are good and add to the virtue of Friday. The expulsion of Adam from Paradise is the reason why his offspring and the Messengers, the Prophets, the righteous and the awliya’ exist. He was not expelled from it as such, but rather it was for a purpose, then he will return to it. With regard to the Hour beginning on a Friday, the reason is so that the reward may be hastened for the Prophets, believers in truth, awliya’ and others, and their honour and high status may be made manifest. This hadeeth points to the virtues of Friday and its high status in relation to the other days.

It was narrated that Abu Lubaabah ibn ‘Abd al-Mundhir said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Friday is the master of days, and the greatest of them before Allaah. It is greater before Allaah than the day of al-Adha and the day of al-Fitr. It has five characteristics: on this day Allaah created Adam, on it He sent Adam down to the earth, on it Allaah caused Adam to die, on it there is a time when a person does not ask Allaah for anything but He gives it to him, so long as he does not ask for anything haraam, and on it the Hour will begin. There is no angel who is close to Allaah, no heaven, no earth, no wind, no mountain and no sea that does not fear Friday.”

Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 1084; classed as hasan by Shaykh al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, no. 2279

Al-Sanadi said:

“They fear Friday” means they fear the onset of the Hour. This indicates that all created beings are aware of the days and they know that the Day of Resurrection will come on a Friday.

The virtues of this day include the following:

1 – On it is Salaat al-Jumu’ah (Friday prayer), which is the best of prayer.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

[al-Jumu’ah 62:9]

Muslim (233) narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The five daily prayers and from one Jumu’ah to the next is an expiation for whatever sins come in between them, so long as one does not commit a major sin.”

2 – Praying Fajr in congregation on Fridays is the best prayer that the Muslim can pray during the week.

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best prayer before Allaah is Fajr prayer on Friday in congregation.”

Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1119

One of the special features of Fajr prayer on Friday is that it is Sunnah to recite Soorat al-Sajdah in the first rak’ah and Soorat al-Insaan in the second.

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) used to recite in Fajr prayer in Fridays Alif-Laam-Meem Tanzeel (Soorat al-Sajdah) in the first rak’ah and Hal ata ‘ala’l-insaan heenun min al-dahr lam yakun shay’an madhkooran (Soorat al-Insaan) in the second.

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 851; Muslim, 880.

Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar said:

It was said that the reason why these two soorahs are recited is because they mention the creation of Adam and what will happen on the Day of Resurrection, because that will come to pass on a Friday.

3 – Whoever dies during the day or night of Friday, Allaah will protect him from the trial of the grave.

It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “There is no Muslim who dies during the day of Friday or the night of Friday but Allaah will protect him from the trial of the grave.”

Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 1074; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Ahkaam al-Janaa’iz, p. 49, 50

These are some of the virtues of Friday. We ask Allaah to help us to please Him.

Sajid Ahmed Umar

Sheikh Sajid was born in Leicester, UK. He attended primary, secondary and college in Harare (Zimbabwe), where he studied IT and obtained a first class degree. Having memorized the Qur'aan at the age of eighteen he turned his attention towards Islamic studies. He travelled to Riyadh where he enrolled at Imaam Muhammed Ibn Saud Islamic University completing a University Diploma in Arabic language and Islamic Sciences. He continued his studies at al-Imaam University, graduating with a Bachelors degree in Shari'ah. He now plans on pursuing his Masters, specialising in Comparative Islamic Law in the Higher Institute for Judiciary Studies (Ma'had al'aaly lil Qadha) at al-Imam University. He has spent much of his semester breaks teaching various Islamic programs for the youth and adults in Saudi Arabia, UK , South Africa, Malawi and Zimbabwe. These classes ranged from lectures in Masaajid, on radio, TV and via online mediums. He has also spent time working on syllabus and curriculums for use in Islamic schools based in the West. He is an Imaam and Khateeb of the largest Masjid in Zimbabwe. He is also a Lecturer at Knowledge International University and a member of their Academic Management Team. The specifics regarding the birth of the final Messenger (ṣalallāhu ‘alayhi wasallam) sent to mankind have been the subject of debate between the scholars of history and Sīrah [2] for centuries. This brief treatise will aim to present in a concise manner the various opinions regarding the year, month, day and time of his birth as well as the statements of scholars aimed at those who take the Prophet's day of birth as a day of celebration. It is brief and does not go into extensive detail in order to allow the reader to grasp the vast range of opinions held by various scholars on this issue. This in turn should allow the reader to ponder over the validity/invalidity of taking it as a day of celebration, bearing in mind how unspecified the matter at hand is.

Friday Naseehah 3: Music

Ruling on music, singing and dancing

Praise be to Allaah.

Ma’aazif is the plural of mi’zafah, and refers to musical instruments (Fath al-Baari, 10/55), instruments which are played (al-Majmoo’, 11/577). Al-Qurtubi (may Allaah have mercy on him) narrated from al-Jawhari (may Allaah have mercy on him) that ma’aazif means singing. In his Sihaah it says that it means musical instruments. It was also said that it refers to the sound of the instruments. In al-Hawaashi by al-Dimyaati (may Allaah have mercy on him) it says: ma’aazif means drums (dufoof, sing. daff) and other instruments which are struck or beaten (Fath al-Baari, 10/55).

Evidence of prohibition in the Qur’aan and Sunnah:

Allaah says in Soorat Luqmaan (interpretation of the meaning):

“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…” [Luqmaan 31:6]

The scholar of the ummah, Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: this means singing. Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this means playing the drum (tabl). (Tafseer al-Tabari, 21/40). Read More

Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).

Al-Sa’di (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this includes all manner of haraam speech, all idle talk and falsehood, and all nonsense that encourages kufr and disobedience; the words of those who say things to refute the truth and argue in support of falsehood to defeat the truth; and backbiting, slander, lies, insults and curses; the singing and musical instruments of the Shaytaan; and musical instruments which are of no spiritual or worldly benefit. (Tafseer al-Sa’di, 6/150)

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of the Sahaabah and Taabi’in, that ‘idle talk’ refers to singing, is sufficient. This was reported with saheeh isnaads from Ibn ‘Abbaas and Ibn Mas’ood. Abu’l-Sahbaa’ said: I asked Ibn Mas’ood about the aayah (interpretation of the meaning), ‘“And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks’ [Luqmaan 31:6]. He said: By Allaah, besides Whom there is no other god, this means singing – and he repeated it three times. It was also reported with a saheeh isnaad from Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) that this means singing. There is no contradiction between the interpretation of “idle talk” as meaning singing and the interpretation of it as meaning stories of the Persians and their kings, and the kings of the Romans, and so on, such as al-Nadr ibn al-Haarith used to tell to the people of Makkah to distract them from the Qur’aan. Both of them are idle talk. Hence Ibn ‘Abbaas said: “Idle talk” is falsehood and singing. Some of the Sahaabah said one and some said the other, and some said both. Singing is worse and more harmful than stories of kings, because it leads to zinaa and makes hypocrisy grow (in the heart); it is the trap of the Shaytaan, and it clouds the mind. The way in which it blocks people from the Qur’aan is worse than the way in which other kinds of false talk block them, because people are naturally inclined towards it and tend to want to listen to it. The aayaat condemn replacing the Qur’aan with idle talk in order to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah without knowledge and taking it as a joke, because when an aayah of the Qur’aan is recited to such a person, he turns his back as if he heard them not, as if there were deafness in his ear. If he hears anything of it, he makes fun of it. All of this happens only in the case of the people who are most stubbornly kaafirs and if some of it happens to singers and those who listen to them, they both have a share of this blame. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, 1/258-259).

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“[Allaah said to Iblees:] And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice (i.e. songs, music, and any other call for Allaah’s disobedience)…” [al-Israa’ 17:64]

It was narrated that Mujaahid (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “And befool them gradually those whom you can among them with your voice” – his voice [the voice of Iblees/Shaytaan] is singing and falsehood. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This idaafah [possessive or genitive construction, i.e., your voice] serves to make the meaning specific, as with the phrases [translated as] “your cavalry” and “your infantry” [later in the same aayah]. Everyone who speaks in any way that is not obedient to Allaah, everyone who blows into a flute or other woodwind instrument, or who plays any haraam kind of drum, this is the voice of the Shaytaan. Everyone who walks to commit some act of disobedience towards Allaah is part of his [the Shaytaan’s] infantry, and anyone who rides to commit sin is part of his cavalry. This is the view of the Salaf, as Ibn ‘Abi Haatim narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas: his infantry is everyone who walks to disobey Allaah. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan).

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Do you then wonder at this recitation (the Qur’aan)?

And you laugh at it and weep not,

Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”

[al-Najm 53:59-61]

‘Ikrimah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: it was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that al-sumood [verbal noun from saamidoon, translated here as “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)”] means “singing”, in the dialect of Himyar; it might be said “Ismidi lanaa” [‘sing for us’ – from the same root as saamidoon/sumood] meaning “ghaniy” [sing]. And he said (may Allaah have mercy on him): When they [the kuffaar] heard the Qur’aan, they would sing, then this aayah was revealed.

Ibn Katheer (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning) “Wasting your (precious) lifetime in pastime and amusements (singing)” – Sufyaan al-Thawri said, narrating from his father from Ibn ‘Abbaas: (this means) singing. This is Yemeni (dialect): ismad lana means ghan lana [sing to us]. This was also the view of ‘Ikrimah. (Tafseer Ibn Katheer).

It was reported from Abu Umaamah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do not sell singing slave women, do not buy them and do not teach them. There is nothing good in this trade, and their price is haraam. Concerning such things as this the aayah was revealed (interpretation of the meaning): ‘And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing) to mislead (men) from the path of Allaah…’ [Luqmaan 31:6].” (Hasan hadeeth)

The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:

“Among my ummah there will certainly be people who permit zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments…” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari ta’leeqan, no. 5590; narrated as mawsool by al-Tabaraani and al-Bayhaqi. See al-Silsilah al-Saheehah by al-Albaani, 91).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This is a saheeh hadeeth narrated by al-Bukhaari in his Saheeh, where he quoted it as evidence and stated that it is mu’allaq and majzoom. He said: Chapter on what was narrated concerning those who permit alcohol and call it by another name.

This hadeeth indicates in two ways that musical instruments and enjoyment of listening to music are haraam. The first is the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “[they] permit” which clearly indicates that the things mentioned, including musical instruments, are haraam according to sharee’ah, but those people will permit them. The second is the fact that musical instruments are mentioned alongside things which are definitely known to be haraam, i.e., zinaa and alcohol: if they (musical instruments) were not haraam, why would they be mentioned alongside these things? Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This hadeeth indicates that ma’aazif are haraam, and ma’aazif means musical instruments according to the scholars of (Arabic) language. This word includes all such instruments. (al-Majmoo’, 11/535).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: And concerning the same topic similar comments were narrated from Sahl ibn Sa’d al-Saa’idi, ‘Imraan ibn Husayn, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Amr, ‘Abd-Allaah ibn ‘Abbaas, Abu Hurayrah, Abu Umaamah al-Baahili, ‘Aa’ishah Umm al-Mu’mineen, ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib, Anas ibn Maalik, ‘Abd al-Rahmaan ibn Saabit and al-Ghaazi ibn Rabee’ah. Then he mentioned it in Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, and it indicates that they (musical instruments) are haraam.

It was narrated that Naafi’ (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Ibn ‘Umar heard a woodwind instrument, and he put his fingers in his ears and kept away from that path. He said to me, O Naafi’, can you hear anything? I said, No. So he took his fingers away from his ears and said: I was with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and he heard something like this, and he did the same thing. (Saheeh Abi Dawood). Some insignificant person said that this hadeeth does not prove that musical instruments are haraam, because if that were so, the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) would have instructed Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both) to put his fingers in his ears as well, and Ibn ‘Umar would have instructed Naafi’ to do likewise! The response to this is: He was not listening to it, but he could hear it. There is a difference between listening and hearing. Shaykh al-Islam (Ibn Taymiyah) (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Concerning (music) which a person does not intend to listen to, there is no prohibition or blame, according to scholarly consensus. Hence blame or praise is connected to listening, not to hearing. The one who listens to the Qur’aan will be rewarded for it, whereas the one who hears it without intending or wanting to will not be rewarded for that, because actions are judged by intentions. The same applies to musical instruments which are forbidden: if a person hears them without intending to, that does not matter. (al-Majmoo’, 10/78).

Ibn Qudaamah al-Maqdisi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: the listener is the one who intends to hear, which was not the case with Ibn ‘Umar (may Allaah be pleased with them both); what happened in his case was hearing. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) needed to know when the sound stopped because he had moved away from that path and blocked his ears. So he did not want to go back to that path or unblock his ears until the noise had stopped, so when he allowed Ibn ‘Umar to continue hearing it, this was because of necessity. (al-Mughni, 10/173)

(Even though the hearing referred to in the comments of the two imaams is makrooh, it was permitted because of necessity, as we will see below in the comments of Imaam Maalik (may Allaah have mercy on him). And Allaah knows best).

The views of the scholars (imaams) of Islam

Al-Qaasim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Singing is part of falsehood. Al-Hasan (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: if there is music involved in a dinner invitation (waleemah), do not accept the invitation (al-Jaami by al-Qayrawaani, p. 262-263).

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The view of the four Imaams is that all kinds of musical instruments are haraam. It was reported in Saheeh al-Bukhaari and elsewhere that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said that there would be among his ummah those who would allow zinaa, silk, alcohol and musical instruments, and he said that they would be transformed into monkeys and pigs… None of the followers of the imaams mentioned any dispute concerning the matter of music. (al-Majmoo’, 11/576).

Al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The four madhhabs are agreed that all musical instruments are haraam. (al-Saheehah, 1/145).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The madhhab of Abu Haneefah is the strictest in this regard, and his comments are among the harshest. His companions clearly stated that it is haraam to listen to all musical instruments such as the flute and the drum, even tapping a stick. They stated that it is a sin which implies that a person is a faasiq (rebellious evil doer) whose testimony should be rejected. They went further than that and said that listening to music is fisq (rebellion, evildoing) and enjoying it is kufr (disbelief). This is their words. They narrated in support of that a hadeeth which could not be attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him). They said: he should try not to hear it if he passes by it or it is in his vicinity. Abu Yoosuf said, concerning a house from which could be heard the sound of musical instruments: Go in without their permission, because forbidding evil actions is obligatory, and if it were not allowed to enter without permission, people could not have fulfilled the obligatory duty (of enjoining what is good and forbidding what is evil). (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, 1/425).

Imaam Maalik (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about playing the drum or flute, if a person happens to hear the sound and enjoy it whilst he is walking or sitting. He said: He should get up if he finds that he enjoys it, unless he is sitting down for a need or is unable to get up. If he is on the road, he should either go back or move on. (al-Jaami’ by al-Qayrawaani, 262). He (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: “The only people who do things like that, in our view, are faasiqs.” (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 14/55).

Ibn ‘Abd al-Barr (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Among the types of earnings which are haraam by scholarly consensus are ribaa, the fee of a prostitute, anything forbidden, bribes, payment for wailing over the dead and singing, payments to fortune-tellers and those who claim to know the unseen and astrologers, payments for playing flutes, and all kinds of gambling. (al-Kaafi).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, explaining the view of Imaam al-Shaafa'i: His companions who know his madhhab (point of view) stated that it is haraam and denounced those who said that he permitted it. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan, 1/425).

The author of Kifaayat al-Akhbaar, who was one of the Shaafa’is, counted musical instruments such as flutes and others, as being munkar (evil), and the one who is present (where they are being played) should denounce them. (He cannot be excused by the fact that there are bad scholars, because they are corrupting the sharee’ah, or evil faqeers – meaning the Sufis, because they call themselves fuqaraa’ or faqeers – because they are ignorant and follow anyone who makes noise; they are not guided by the light of knowledge; rather they are blown about by every wind. (Kifaayat al-Akhbaar, 2/128).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: With regard to the view of Imaam Ahmad, his son ‘Abd-Allaah said: I asked my father about singing. He said: Singing makes hypocrisy grow in the heart; I do not like it. Then he mentioned the words of Maalik: the evildoers (faasiqs) among us do that. (Ighaathat al-Lahfaan).

Ibn Qudaamah, the researcher of the Hanbali madhhab – (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: Musical instruments are of three types which are haraam. These are the strings and all kinds of flute, and the lute, drum and rabaab (stringed instrument) and so on. Whoever persists in listening to them, his testimony should be rejected. (al-Mughni, 10/173). And he said (may Allaah have mercy on him); If a person is invited to a gathering in which there is something objectionable, such as wine and musical instruments, and he is able to denounce it, then he should attend and speak out against it, because then he will be combining two obligatory duties. If he is not able to do that, then he should not attend. (al-Kaafi, 3/118)

Al-Tabari (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The scholars of all regions are agreed that singing is makrooh and should be prevented. Although Ibraaheem ibn Sa’d and ‘Ubayd-Allaah al-‘Anbari differed from the majority, (it should be noted that) the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Adhere to the majority.” And whoever dies differing from the majority, dies as a jaahili. (Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 14/56). In earlier generations, the word “makrooh” was used to mean haraam, then it took on the meaning of “disliked”. But this is to be understood as meaning that it is forbidden, because he [al-Tabari] said “it should be prevented”, and nothing is to be prevented except that which is haraam; and because in the two hadeeths quoted, music is denounced in the strongest terms. Al-Qurtubi (may Allaah have mercy on him) is the one who narrated this report, then he said: Abu’l-Faraj and al-Qaffaal among our companions said: the testimony of the singer and the dancer is not to be accepted. I say: if it is proven that this matter is not permissible, then accepting payment for it is not permissible either.

Shaykh al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) said: What Ibraaheem ibn Sa’d and ‘Ubayd-Allaah al-‘Anbari said about singing is not like the kind of singing that is known nowadays, for they would never have allowed this kind of singing which is the utmost in immorality and obscenity. (al-I’laam)

Ibn Taymiyah (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: It is not permissible to make musical instruments. (al-Majmoo’, 22/140). And he said: According to the majority of fuqahaa’, it is permissible to destroy musical instruments, such as the tanboor [a stringed instrument similar to a mandolin]. This is the view of Maalik and is the more famous of the two views narrated from Ahmad. (al-Majmoo’, 28/113). And he said: …Ibn al-Mundhir mentioned that the scholars were agreed that it is not permissible to pay people to sing and wail… the consensus of all the scholars whose views we have learned about is that wailing and singing are not allowed. Al-Shu’bi, al-Nakha’i and Maalik regarded that as makrooh [i.e., haraam]. Abu Thawr, al-Nu’maan – Abu Haneefah (may Allaah have mercy on him) – and Ya’qoob and Muhammad, two of the students of Abu Haneefah said: it is not permissible to pay anything for singing and wailing. This is our view. And he said: musical instruments are the wine of the soul, and what it does to the soul is worse than what intoxicating drinks do. (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 10/417).

Ibn Abi Shaybah (may Allaah have mercy on him) reported that a man broke a mandolin belonging to another man, and the latter took his case to Shurayh. But Shurayh did not award him any compensation – i.e., he did not make the first man pay the cost of the mandolin, because it was haraam and had no value. (al-Musannaf, 5/395).

Al-Baghawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) stated in a fatwa that it is haraam to sell all kinds of musical instruments such as mandolins, flutes, etc. Then he said: If the images are erased and the musical instruments are altered, then it is permissible to sell their parts, whether they are silver, iron, wood or whatever. (Sharh al-Sunnah, 8/28)

An appropriate exception

The exception to the above is the daff – without any rings (i.e., a hand-drum which looks like a tambourine, but without any rattles) – when used by women on Eids and at weddings. This is indicated by saheeh reports. Shaykh al-Islam (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: But the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) made allowances for certain types of musical instruments at weddings and the like, and he made allowances for women to play the daff at weddings and on other joyful occasions. But the men at his time did not play the daff or clap with their hands. It was narrated in al-Saheeh that he said: “Clapping is for women and tasbeeh (saying Subhaan Allaah) is for men.” And he cursed women who imitate men and men who imitate women. Because singing and playing the daff are things that women do, the Salaf used to call any man who did that a mukhannath (effeminate man), and they used to call male singers effeminate – and how many of them there are nowadays! It is well known that the Salaf said this.

In a similar vein is the hadeeth of ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her), when her father (may Allaah be pleased with him) entered upon her at the time of Eid, and there were two young girls with her who were singing the verses that the Ansaar had said on the day of Bu’aath – and any sensible person will know what people say about war. Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: “Musical instruments of the Shaytaan in the house of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)!” The Messenger of Allaah had turned away from them and was facing the wall – hence some scholars said that Abu Bakr (may Allaah be pleased with him) would not tell anybody off in front of the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him), but he thought that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was not paying attention to what was happening. And Allaah knows best. He (the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him)) said: “Leave them alone, O Abu Bakr, for every nation has its Eid, and this is our Eid, the people of Islam.” This hadeeth shows that it was not the habit of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and his companions to gather to listen to singing, hence Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq called it “the musical instruments of the Shaytaan”. And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) approved of this appellation and did not deny it when he said, “Leave them alone, for every nation has its Eid and this is our Eid.” This indicates that the reason why this was permitted was because it was the time of Eid, and the prohibition remained in effect at times other than Eid, apart from the exceptions made for weddings in other ahaadeeth. Shaykh al-Albaani explained this in his valuable book Tahreem Aalaat al-Tarab (the Prohibition of Musical Instruments). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) approved of young girls singing at Eid, as stated in the hadeeth: “So that the mushrikeen will know that in our religion there is room for relaxation.” There is no indication in the hadeeth about the two young girls that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was listening to them. The commands and prohibitions have to do with listening, not merely hearing, just as in the case of seeing, the rules have to do with intentionally looking and not what happens by accident. So it is clear that this is for women only. Imaam Abu ‘Ubayd (may Allaah have mercy on him) defined the daff as “that which is played by women.” (Ghareeb al-Hadeeth, 3/64).

An inappropriate exception

Some of them make an exception for drums at times of war, and consequentially some modern scholars have said that military music is allowed. But there is no basis for this at all, for a number of reasons, the first of which is that this is making an exception with no clear evidence, apart from mere opinion and thinking that it is good, and this is wrong. The second reason is that what the Muslims should do at times of war is to turn their hearts towards their Lord. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“They ask you (O Muhammad) about the spoils of war. Say: ‘The spoils are for Allaah and the Messenger.’ So fear Allaah and adjust all matters of difference among you…” [al-Anfaal 8:1]. But using music is the opposite of this idea of taqwa and it would distract them from remembering their Lord. Thirdly, using music is one of the customs of the kuffaar, and it is not permitted to imitate them, especially with regard to something that Allaah has forbidden to us in general, such as music. (al-Saheehah, 1/145)

“No people go astray after having been guided except they developed arguments amongst themselves.” (Saheeh)

Some of them used the hadeeth about the Abyssinians playing in the mosque of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) as evidence that singing is allowed! Al-Bukhaari included this hadeeth in his Saheeh under the heading Baab al-Hiraab wa’l-Daraq Yawm al-‘Eid (Chapter on Spears and Shields on the Day of Eid). Al-Nawawi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This indicates that it is permissible to play with weapons and the like in the mosque, and he applied that to other activities connected with jihaad. (Sharh Muslim). But as al-Haafiz ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: whoever speaks about something which is not his profession will come up with weird ideas such as these.

Some of them use as evidence the hadeeth about the singing of the two young girls, which we have discussed above, but we will quote what Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, because it is valuable:

I am amazed that you quote as evidence for allowing listening to sophisticated songs the report which we mentioned about how two young girls who were below the age of puberty sang to a young woman on the day of Eid some verses of Arab poetry about bravery in war and other noble characteristics. How can you compare this to that? What is strange is that this hadeeth is one of the strongest proofs against them. The greatest speaker of the truth [Abu Bakr al-Siddeeq] called them musical instruments of the Shaytaan, and the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) approved of that appellation, but he made an exception in the case of these two young girls who had not yet reached the age of responsibility and the words of whose songs could not corrupt anyone who listened to them. Can this be used as evidence to allow what you do and what you know of listening (to music) which includes (bad) things which are not hidden?! Subhaan Allaah! How people can be led astray! (Madaarij al-Saalikeen, 1/493).

Ibn al-Jawzi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) was young at that time; nothing was transmitted from her after she reached the age of puberty except condemnation of singing. Her brother’s son, al-Qaasim ibn Muhammad, condemned singing and said that it was not allowed to listen to it, and he took his knowledge from her. (Talbees Iblees, 229). Al-Haafiz ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: A group of the Sufis used this hadeeth – the hadeeth about the two young girls – as evidence that singing is allowed and it is allowed to listen to it, whether it is accompanied by instruments or not. This view is sufficiently refuted by the clear statement of ‘Aa’ishah in the following hadeeth, where she says, “They were not singers.” She made it clear that they were not singers as such, although this may be understood from the wording of the report. So we should limit it to what was narrated in the text as regards the occasion and the manner, so as to reduce the risk of going against the principle, i.e., the hadeeth. And Allaah knows best. (Fath al-Baari, 2/442-443).

Some people even have the nerve to suggest that the Sahaabah and Taabi’een listened to singing, and that they saw nothing wrong with it!

Al-Fawzaan (may Allaah preserve him) said: We demand them to show us saheeh isnaads going back to these Sahaabah and Taabi’een, proving what they attribute to them. Then he said: Imaam Muslim mentioned in his introduction to his Saheeh that ‘Abd-Allaah ibn al-Mubaarak said: The isnaad is part of religion. Were it not for the isnaad, whoever wanted to could say whatever he wanted to.

Some of them said that the ahaadeeth which forbid music are full of faults. No hadeeth was free of being criticized by some of the scholars. Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The ahaadeeth which were narrated concerning music being haraam are not full of faults as has been claimed. Some of them are in Saheeh al-Bukhaari which is the soundest of books after the Book of Allaah, and some of them are hasan and some are da’eef. But because they are so many, with different isnaads, they constitute definitive proof that singing and musical instruments are haraam.

All the imaams agreed on the soundness of the ahaadeeth which forbid singing and musical instruments, apart from Abu Haamid al-Ghazzaali, but al-Ghazzaali did not have knowledge of hadeeth; and Ibn Hazam, but al-Albaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) explained where Ibn Hazam went wrong, and Ibn Hazam himself said that if any of (these ahaadeeth) were saheeh, he would follow that. But now they have proof that these reports are saheeh because there are so many books by the scholars which state that these ahaadeeth are saheeh, but they turn their backs on that. They are far more extreme than Ibn Hazam and they are nothing like him, for they are not qualified and cannot be referred to.

Some of them said that the scholars forbade singing because it is mentioned alongside gatherings in which alcohol is drunk and where people stay up late at night for evil purposes.

Al-Shawkaani (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The response to this is that mentioning these things in conjunction does not only mean that what is haraam is what is joined together in this manner. Otherwise this would mean that zinaa, as mentioned in the ahaadeeth, is not haraam unless it is accompanied by alcohol and the use of musical instruments. By the same token, an aayah such as the following (interpretation of the meaning):

“Verily, he used not to believe in Allaah, the Most Great,

And urged not on the feeding of Al‑Miskeen (the poor).”

[al-Haaqqah 69:33-34]

would imply that it is not haraam to disbelieve in Allaah unless that is accompanied by not encouraging the feeding of the poor. If it is said that the prohibition of such things one at a time is proven from other reports, the response to that is that the prohibition of musical instruments is also known from other evidence, as mentioned above. (Nayl al-Awtaar, 8/107).

Some of them said that “idle talk” does not refer to singing; the refutation of that has been mentioned above. Al-Qurtubi (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: This – the view that it means singing – is the best that has been said concerning this aayah, and Ibn Mas’ood swore three times by Allaah besides Whom there is no other god, that it does refer to singing. Then he mentioned other imaams who said the same thing. Then he mentioned other views concerning the matter. Then he said: The first view is the best of all that has been said on this matter, because of the marfoo’ hadeeth, and because of the view of the Sahaabah and the Taabi’een. (Tafseer al-Qurtubi).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him), after quoting this Tafseer, said: Al-Haakim Abu ‘Abd-Allaah said in the Tafseer of Kitaab al-Mustadrak: Let the one who is seeking this knowledge know that the Tafseer of a Sahaabi who witnessed the revelation is a hadeeth with isnaad according to the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhaari and Muslim). Elsewhere in his book, he said: In our view this hadeeth has the same strength as a marfoo’ report. Although their tafseer is still subject to further examination, it is still more readily acceptable than the tafseer of those who came after them, because they are the most knowledgeable among this ummah of what Allaah meant in his Book. It was revealed among them and they were the first people to be addressed by it. They heard the tafseer from the Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in word and in deed. And they were Arabs who understood the true meanings of (Arabic) words, so Muslims should avoid resorting to any other interpretation as much as possible.

Some of them said that singing is a form of worship if the intention is for it to help one to obey Allaah!

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: How strange! What type of faith, light, insight, guidance and knowledge can be gained from listening to tuneful verses and music in which most of what is said is haraam and deserves the wrath and punishment of Allaah and His Messenger? … How can anyone who has the least amount of insight and faith in his heart draw near to Allaah and increase his faith by enjoying something which is hated by Him, and He detests the one who says it and the one who accepts it? (Madaarij al-Saalikeen, 1/485)

Shaykh al-Islam said, discussing the state of the person who has gotten used to listening to singing: Hence you find that those who have gotten used to it and for whom it is like food and drink will never have the desire to listen to the Qur’aan or feel joy when they hear it, and they never find in listening to its verses the same feeling that they find when listening to poetry. Indeed, if they hear the Qur’aan, they hear it with an inattentive heart and talk whilst it is being recited, but if they hear whistling and clapping of hands, they lower their voices and keep still, and pay attention. (Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 11/557 ff)

Some say that music and musical instruments have the effect of softening people’s hearts and creating gentle feelings. This is not true, because it provokes physical desires and whims. If it really did what they say, it would have softened the hearts of the musicians and made their attitude and behaviour better, but most of them, as we know, are astray and behave badly.

Conclusion

Perhaps – for fair-minded and objective readers – this summary will make it clear that the view that music is permissible has no firm basis. There are no two views on this matter. So we must advise in the best manner, and then take it step by step and denounce music, if we are able to do so. We should not be deceived by the fame of a man in our own times in which the people who are truly committed to Islam have become strangers. The one who says that singing and musical instruments are permitted is simply supporting the whims of people nowadays, as if the masses were issuing fatwas and he is simply signing them! If a matter arises, they will look at the views of fuqahaa’ on this matter, then they will take the easiest view, as they claim. Then they will look for evidence, or just specious arguments which are worth no more than a lump of dead meat. How often have these people approved things in the name of sharee’ah which in fact have nothing to do with Islam!

Strive to learn your Islam from the Book of your Lord and the Sunnah of your Prophet. Do not say, So-and-so said, for you cannot learn the truth only from men. Learn the truth and then measure people against it. This should be enough for the one who controls his whims and submits himself to his Lord. May what we have written above heal the hearts of the believers and dispel the whispers in the hearts of those who are stricken with insinuating whispers. May it expose everyone who is deviating from the path of Revelation and taking the easiest options, thinking that he has come up with something which none of the earlier generations ever achieved, and speaking about Allaah without knowledge. They sought to avoid fisq (evildoing) and ended up committing bid’ah – may Allaah not bless them in it. It would have been better for them to follow the path of the believers.

And Allaah knows best. May Allaah bless and grant peace to His Messenger who made clear the path of the believers, and to his companions and those who follow them in truth until the Day of Judgement.

Riaz Ansary graduated from the College of Sharee'ah of the Islamic University of Madeenah in 1993. He completed his master's degree in usool al-fiqh at the International Islamic University of Malaysia and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization, also in Malaysia.

Top Ten Things Every Student of Knowledge Should Know

Many times young Muslims decide they want to become scholars and embark on the path of knowledge with little knowledge of what to expect. I was such a youngster who signed up for an “‘alim” course with no idea what an ‘alim is or where it would lead me.

In order to help my fellow Muslims prepare themselves psychologically and not repeat the mistakes I made, I present to you ten things I feel every student of knowledge must know (in no particular order):

1. A few years of study does not make one a scholar:

Too often, young Muslims study a few books or for a few years and then develop a “scholar” complex. They begin to force their opinions on others as if they can’t be wrong. They become intolerant to other views, and they write anybody off who disagrees with them as deviant.

We need to realize, before we even begin our journey of knowledge, that the sciences of Islam are many and deep; the variety of opinions in fiqh are multiple, and the chances of always being right are slim. I advise all of my fellow young Muslims to tread carefully, keep egos in check, approach differences with the possibility of being wrong, and never forget to say “Allah knows best”.

2. Manners come first:

In the past, most scholars would train their students in good manners before teaching them Islamic knowledge. Parents, too, would encourage their children to learn manners before the Islamic sciences.

Sadly, today many institutes do not teach good manners to their students, expecting them to automatically gain them through their study of Islam. This leads to Islamic teachers with bad manners, which in turn chases people away from Islam.

In this regard, anybody who is studying or teaching Islam must learn the proper manners of dealing with people, mercy, tolerance, and being non-judgmental and must possess a personality that attracts people; otherwise, we might do more harm than good.

3. Studying Islam does not make one immune to sin:

Some people have the misconception that if they study Islam, they will reach a level of piety from which they can’t slip. The reality is that Shaytan tries even harder to lead people of knowledge astray as it has a more detrimental effect on the community as a whole.

So instead of temptations growing less, they are more likely to increase and intensify as Shaytan tries to use every means at his disposal to lead us astray. We need to realize this, prepare for it, and never let our guard down as the Shayateen try very hard to make a knowledgeable Muslim fall astray.

4. People will judge you:

While we should not be judgmental to people as Islamic teachers, the reality is that people will still judge you. Many people are intimidated by practicing Muslims. When they see a practicing Muslim, they see their own flaws and deficiencies and so they search for fault in that individual. We should not be surprised if people judge our clothing, mannerisms or weaknesses; it is their way to try and console themselves or justify their sins. We need to always keep this in mind and be able to respond appropriately.

5. You represent your Faith:

When a person chooses to study Islam, especially once they earn a title, they automatically become a representation of the deen. When people see an Imam or a Shaykh, they expect to see a living example of Islam. If people see such a person sinning, they will either lose respect for him and become disillusioned about Islam, or they will take it as proof that it can’t be that big a sin. Either way, for an Islamic teacher, our lives represent our deen, so we should always be careful not to give a wrong impression of Islam.

6. You will be tested:

Undoubtedly, life is a test and every human is being tested all the time in different ways. However, one should not think that because one is studying Islam and teaching it, Allah will grant a life of ease and comfort. Rather, history proves that those closest to Allah are the most severely tested. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The most severely tested people are the prophets, then those closest to them in piety then those closest to them.”

Be prepared to be tested and take it as a sign that Allah loves you and wants to test your love for Him. Remember that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever embarks on a path to study Islam has embarked on the path towards Paradise.” It is not the information alone that takes a person to Paradise; it is his fulfillment of its rights by understanding, practicing and preaching it to others and dealing with all the problems that go along with this that ultimately leads to Paradise.

7. Studying should not be an end; rather it should be a step to a higher goal:

I have met many Moulanas, Imams and Shaykhs with no goals or aspirations. Despite the ummah having so many issues that need dealing with, these men don’t seem to care. Upon further analysis, I realized that they set out to study with one of the following goals: to please their parents, to get a title, or to get the knowledge. Once they obtained the knowledge, they did not know or care about what to do next, so they carried along with their lives like donkeys carrying books.

Any person who studies Islam should be introspective and find a good motivation to study. Perhaps you would like to become a da’ee and a means of guidance for non-Muslims. Perhaps you would like to establish an Islamic centre in an area that needs one. Perhaps you would like become a mujtahid in a field that is lacking many quality scholars. Whatever you decide, it should be something noble that you wish to do for the sake of Allah after completing your studies. In short, studying should not be a goal but a means to help accomplish higher goals.

8. You can’t change everyone:

In life, we do not always get what we want. Similarly, in Islamic work things don’t always go our way. Remember that not everybody you meet will agree with you, listen to you or accept your message. Rather, there will always be people who will disagree with you or flat out reject you. This is reality and we have to be prepared for this by realizing guidance is only in Allah’s Hands, and we are only responsible for conveying the message.

9. You will make mistakes:

Many of us study Islam to make up for the sins of our past. Yet, being humans, we are never free from sins and mistakes and so some people become depressed and give up Islamic work when they realize that they are now knowledgeable but still occasionally fall into sin.

The truth is that the Shaytan wants us to quit and by doing so we are just playing into his hands, but Allah is Most Forgiving to those who repent. Every time you fall down and make a mistake, pick yourself back up, turn to Allah in repentance and try again to be a good Muslim, and never EVER allow your sins or mistakes stop you from doing Islamic work. Rather, it should motivate us to do more Islamic work so that our good deeds outweigh our sins on the Last Day.

10. The reward for studying and teaching Islam is worth it:

While most of the above make it seem like Islamic Work is a difficult field, that is not the purpose of this article. The purpose was solely to prepare for the many challenges and responsibilities we face while trying to serve Allah.

The reality is that the reward of dealing with all of the above is truly worth it, whether it is the rewards in this world or in the akhirah. As far as the akhirah goes, we know that the path of knowledge leads to Paradise but additional to that is the fact that insha’Allah you will get the rewards for the good deeds of those you teach or inspire to do good.

In this sense, it is one of the only good deeds we can do where the reward keeps multiplying. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “When a person dies, all their deeds end except three: charity which continues to benefit, knowledge he left behind which people benefit from, and righteous children who pray for him.”

As far as this world goes, the greatest reward an Islamic worker can receive in this world is seeing the fruits of his efforts. When a person tells you they changed and became a better Muslim because of your influence or when a person takes their shahadah at your hands, there is no feeling equal to it, and any sacrifice you have being through for the deen feels worth it.

So, my beloved brothers and sisters, let us study Islam, seeking its rewards yet knowing the responsibilities and trials that go along with it. I wrote this firstly as a reminder to myself as well as to anybody else involved in the field of Islamic Studies. May Allah keep us all steadfast on His deen. Ameen.

CALL FROM IOU

In the bygone days of 1947, to Christian parents in Jamaica
A child named "Dennis Bradley Philips" was born with the "fitrah"
He was told that God had a son - And Jesus was his saviour,
His ancestry leads to a grandfather, who was a Bible scholar

He was supposed to be the inheritor of the deviated clan
But his CREATOR was the Most Merficiful, Who had a different plan
Days turned into years and this young man who once loved the guitar
Was not satisfied with the life he was living, for it was not truly up to par

He began to look for truth, in the way which is every soul's duty
His eyes were cooled with its essence, his heart was cleansed with its purity
The words of his Creator gave him advice, the Seerah gave him peace
At the age of 24 he embraced Islaam, and thereby defeated Iblees!

He thanked the Almighty for guiding him, for saving him from the fall
It was Allaah who had guided him in the journey from Dennis to Bilal
His love for knowledge made him study more and more
And he gained wisdom and degrees in his endeavor

His faith in Allaah kept him strong, he had ups and downs all the way
He was accused, he was blasphemed - but it did not lead him astray
With subtle words he answered every critic, he proved his points
That one can't mislead the one whom for righteousness Allaah appoints!

With the true teachings of Islaam, he wanted to educate the ummah
To please Allaah alone, Who would add to his pleasures of Jannah
This gave birth to a place of learning on the internet - a human invention
Praise be to Allaah, Who has given such skills to man - the best of HIS Creation!

The knowledge of deen imparted through the best of instructors
The devoted tutorial assistants with a surplus of parameters
The atmosphere so relaxing that it rejuvenates the soul
The most affordable of its kind, costing negligible on the whole

A source of knowledge for anybody from anywhere
Covering the globe slowly, reaching everywhere
The comfort of the family is no more to be sacrificed
Sitting inside the house is where you are Islamicized!

Stroke by stroke, like ABCs, you are taught the Arabic alphabet
In no time you will learn the language of Qur'an, if you are dedicated
From the basics of Islaam to the mastering of its sciences
There is a team of experts monitoring all advances

Brothers, learn here that the best of you is the one best to his family
Sisters, learn how liberated you are by preserving your modesty

Friday Naseehah 2: Backbiting (gheebah)

Prohibition of Backbiting in Islam

Allah, exalted be He, says in His glorious Quraan,

“neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful”

[al-Hujuraat 49:12]

Hadeeth:

1. It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah SAWS (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Do you know what gheebah (backbiting) is?” They said, “Allaah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Saying something about your brother that he dislikes.” It was said, “What if what I say about my brother is true?” He said, “If what you say is true then you have backbitten about him, and if it is not true, then you have slandered him.” Narrated by Muslim, 2589

2.It was narrated that Ibn ‘Abbaas said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) passed by two graves and said, “They are being punished, but they are not being punished for anything that was difficult to avoid. One of them used to walk about spreading malicious gossip (nameemah), and the other used not to take precautions to avoid getting urine on himself when he urinated.” Then he called for a green branch, which he split in two and planted a piece on each grave, and said, “May their torment be reduced so long as these do not dry out.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 213; Muslim, 292

The expiation for Gheebah

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (may Allaah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever has wronged his brother with regard to his honour or anything else, let him seek his forgiveness today, before there will be no dinar and no dirham, and if he has any good deeds to his credit they will be taken from him in a manner commensurate with the wrong he did, and if he has no good deeds, then some of his counterpart’s bad deeds will be taken and added to his burden.”

Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 2317.

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah said:

Whoever wrongs a person by slandering him, backbiting about him or insulting him, then repents, Allaah will accept his repentance, but if the one who was wronged finds out about that, he has the right to settle the score. But if he slandered him or backbit about him and the person did not hear of that, then there are two views according to the scholars, both of which were narrated from Ahmad, the more correct of which is that he should not tell him that he spoke against him in his absence. It was said that he should rather speak well of him in his absence just as he spoke badly of him in his absence, as al-Hasan al-Basri said: the expiation for gheebah is to pray for forgiveness for the person about whom you backbit.

Friday Naseehah 1: Interest (Usury)

Interest (Riba)

Quranic verses which prohibits Interest.

1. “Allaah has permitted trading and forbidden Riba” [al-Baqarah 2:275]

2. “O you who believe! Be afraid of Allaah and give up what remains (due to you) from Riba” [al-Baqarah 2:278]

3. Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah . But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein. [Al-Baqara, Chapter 2, Verse 275]

4. Allah destroys interest and gives increase for charities. And Allah does not like every sinning disbeliever. [ Al-Baqara, Chapter 2, Verse 276]

5. O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful. [Aal-e-Imran, Chapter 3, Verse 130]

6. And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah . But what you give in zakah, desiring the countenance of Allah - those are the multipliers. [Ar-Room, Chapter 30, Verse 39]

Prophetic Traditions which prohibits Interest.

1. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2826 Narrated byAbuHurayrah Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "Usury has seventy parts, the least important being that a man should marry his mother." Ibn Majah and Bayhaqi, transmitted it in Shu'ab al-Iman.

2. Al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2825 Narrated byAbdullah ibn Hanzalah ; Abdullah ibn Abbas Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said, "A dirham which a man knowingly receives in usury is more serious than thirty-six acts of fornication."

Adab And Guidelines For The Forum

Assalam alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakaatuhu

1. Please stick to the Qur’aan and Sunnah as understood by the Salaf

“And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allâh (i.e. this Qur'ân), and be not divided among yourselves,...” [The Noble Qur’aan, Soorah Aali Imran 3:103]

The following are statements from the four great imams about sticking to the Qur’an and authentic Sunnah. The Quotes are from Sheikh al-Albaanee’s book, “The Prophet’s Prayer Described”.

Imam Abu Haneefa (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “When a hadeeth is found to be saheeh, then that is my madhhab.” [Ibn 'Aabideen in al-Haashiyah (1/63)] And he also said: “When I say something contradicting the Book of Allaah the Exalted or what is narrated from the Messenger (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), then ignore my saying.” [Al-Fulaani in Eeqaaz al-Himam (p. 50)]

Imam Maalik (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Truly I am only a mortal: I make mistakes (sometimes) and I am correct (sometimes). Therefore, look into my opinions: all that agrees with the Book and the Sunnah, accept it; and all that does not agree with the Book and the Sunnah, ignore it.” [Ibn 'Abdul Barr in Jaami' Bayaan al-'Ilm (2/32)] And he said: “Everyone after the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) will have his sayings accepted and rejected - not so the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam).” [Ibn 'Abdul Haadi declared it saheeh in Irshaad as- Saalik (227/1)]

Imam Shaafi’ee said: “The sunnahs of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) reach, as well as escape from, every one of us. So whenever I voice my opinion, or formulate a principle, where something contrary to my view exists on the authority of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), then the correct view is what the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) has said, and it is my view.” [Related by Haakim with a continuous sanad up to Shaafi'i, as in Taareekh Dimashq of Ibn 'Asaakir (15/1/3), I'laam al- Mooqi'een (2/363, 364) & Eeqaaz (p. 100)]

Imam Ahamed (may Allah have mercy on him) said: “Do not follow my opinion; neither follow the opinion of Maalik, nor Shaafi'i, nor Awzaa'i, nor Thawri, but take from where they took.” [Fulaani (p. 113) & Ibn al-Qayyim in I'laam (2/302).] And he said: “Whoever rejects a statement of the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) is on the brink of destruction.” [Ibn al-Jawzi (p. 182).]

2. Please Do Not Abuse Each Other

Narrated Abu Musa: Some people asked Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam), "Whose Islam is the best? i.e. (Who is a very good Muslim)?" He replied, "One who avoids harming the Muslims with his tongue and hands." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 10]

Narrated 'Abdullah: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Abusing a Muslim is Fusuq (an evil doing) and killing him is Kufr (disbelief)….” [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 46]

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should not harm his neighbour, and anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should entertain his guest generously and anybody who believes in Allah and the Last Day should talk what is good or keep quiet. (i.e. abstain from all kinds of evil and dirty talk). [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 47]

Narrated Anas: I served the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) for ten years, and he never said to me, "Uf" (a minor harsh word denoting impatience) and never blamed me by saying, "Why did you do so or why didn't you do so?" [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 64]

Narrated Anas: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "None of you will have faith till he wishes for his (Muslim) brother what he likes for himself." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 12]

Narrated Jarir bin 'Abdullah: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "He who is not merciful to others, will not be treated mercifully. [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 42]

Narrated Masruq: We were sitting with 'Abdullah bin 'Amr who was narrating to us (Hadith): He said, "Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) was neither a Fahish nor a Mutafahhish, and he used to say, 'The best among you are the best in character (having good manners)."' [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 61]

3. Try To Help Each Other And Make Things Easy For Each Other

Narrated Abu Musa: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "A believer to another believer is like a building whose different parts enforce each other." The Prophet then clasped his hands with the fingers interlaced. (At that time) the Prophet was sitting and a man came and begged or asked for something. The Prophet faced us and said, "Help and recommend him and you will receive the reward for it, and Allah will bring about what He will through His Prophet's tongue." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 55]

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar: Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "…Whoever fulfilled the needs of his brother, Allah will fulfill his needs; whoever brought his (Muslim) brother out of a discomfort, Allah will bring him out of the discomforts of the Day of Resurrection,…" [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 3, Book 43, Number 622 and Volume 9, Book 85, Number 83; Saheeh Muslim, Book 032, Number 6250]

Narrated Anas bin Malik: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Make things easy for the people, and do not make it difficult for them, and make them calm (with glad tidings) and do not repulse (them )." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 146]

4. Always Greet Each Other With ‘Salam’

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: A person asked Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) . "What (sort of) deeds in or (what qualities of) Islam are good?" He replied, "To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you don't know." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 27]

5. Keep Away From Hypocrisy And Lying

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) will be a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics will have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up.

1. Whenever he is entrusted, he betrays.

2. Whenever he speaks, he tells a lie.

3. Whenever he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.

4. Whenever he quarrels

[Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 1, Book 2, Number 33]

Narrated Samura bin Jundub: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "I saw (in a dream), two men came to me." Then the Prophet narrated the story (saying), "They said, 'The person, the one whose cheek you saw being torn away (from the mouth to the ear) was a liar and used to tell lies and the people would report those lies on his authority till they spread all over the world. So he will be punished like that till the Day of Resurrection."' [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 118]

Narrated 'Abdullah: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Falsehood leads to Al-Fajur (i.e. wickedness, evil-doing), and Al-Fajur (wickedness) leads to the (Hell) Fire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allah, a liar.” [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 116]

6. Do Not Look For Others Faults

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, ".. and do not look for the others' faults…” [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 90]

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "…and do not hate one another; and O Allah's worshipers! Be brothers (as Allah has ordered you!)” [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 90]

7. Conceal Each Others Faults

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Umar: Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "…and whoever screened a Muslim, Allah will screen him on the Day of Resurrection . " [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 3, Book 43, Number 622 and Volume 9, Book 85, Number 83; Saheeh Muslim, Book 032, Number 6250]

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) as saying: The servant (who conceals) the faults of others in this world, Allah would conceal his faults on the Day of Resurrection [Saheeh Muslim, Book 032, Number 6267]

8. Do Not Accuse Each Other Of Kufr (Disbelief) [Unless you have concrete evidence]

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "If a man says to his brother, O Kafir (disbeliever)!' Then surely one of them is such (i.e., a Kifir). [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 125d]

9. Do Not Be Suspicious and Backbite about each other

“O you who believe! Avoid much suspicions, indeed some suspicions are sins. And spy not, neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allâh. Verily, Allâh is the One Who accepts repentance, Most Merciful.” [The Noble Qur’aan, Soorah Al-Hujurat 49:12]

10. Avoiding Being Aggressive

Narrated Abu Huraira: A man said to the Prophet (sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) , "Advise me! "The Prophet said, "Do not become angry and furious." The man asked (the same) again and again, and the Prophet said in each case, "Do not become angry and furious." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 137]

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Apostle(sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam) said, "The strong is not the one who overcomes the people by his strength, but the strong is the one who controls himself while in anger." [Saheeh Bukhaari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 135]

11. Always Verify Information You Receive

“O you who believe! If a rebellious evil person comes to you with a news, verify it, lest you harm people in ignorance, and afterwards you become regretful to what you have done.” [The Noble Qur’aan, Soorah Al-Hujurat 49:6]

12. Always reference everything and avoid giving personal opinions (unless it’s a discussion)

“And follow not (O man i.e., say not, or do not or witness not, etc.) that of which you have no knowledge (e.g. one's saying: "I have seen," while in fact he has not seen, or "I have heard," while he has not heard). Verily! The hearing, and the sight, and the heart, of each of those you will be questioned (by Allâh).” [The Noble Qur’aan, Soorah Al-Isra 17:36]

13. Keep It Short, Simple And To The Point

14. Avoid Sending Private Messages To The Opposite Sex

The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) warned us against being alone with a non-mahram woman, and said: “No man is alone with a woman but the shaytaan is the third one present.” [Narrated by Ahmad, al-Tirmidhi and al-Haakim; classed as saheeh by al-Albaanee in Saheeh al-Jaami’ (2546)]

15. Always Stick To The Topic

16. Respect The Teachers And Do Not Reply To Posts They Have Closed (unless you have a query)

17. Questions and Problems Should Be Emailed To The Coordinator Or Teachers or respective Tutorial Assitants.

Tips On Writing Islamic Articles

1. Always start in the name of Allah. Purify your intentions and remember your aim is to educate and not attack or spread falsehood

2. Make sure the topic you wish to cover is something new. There is no need to flood the net with articles on the same issues (using the same content) if there are many un-tackled issues.

3. Try to make it short and to the point. However, don’t leave important details out. Make sure it is comprehensive. The aim should be to answer the reads questions and not leaving him asking even more.

4. All work must be referenced. This means all Ayats, ahadeeth, Athar, even scholarly comments, must be referenced and authenticated. Remember that it is sinful to spread lies and fabricated information

5. Do use works of the people of knowledge. If you work lacks scholarly information, it will always feel incomplete.

6. Plagiarism is unacceptable and credit must be given to whom it is due.

7. Use clear fonts and try to differentiate between the Ayats and Ahadeeth.

8. Its good to have your work checked by someone more knowledgeable before passing it on.

9. Use paragraphs and always check your grammar and spelling.

10. Use a structure format. For example, if you are tackling the issue of ‘Raising the Hands in Salah’, start of by explaining the issue, next bring scholars opinions, show their proofs (Qur'an, ahadeeth, etc.) and authenticities, and finally conclude with the strongest opinion.

Masha’Allah, you have all presented some excellent assignments recently and I would like to congratulate you on your efforts and make Dua that Allah increase us all in knowledge and makes us of the Muttaqûn.

I have already posted Writing tips early and wish to Focus on one of the points I made, the Structure of your essays.

Here are some points to keep in mind:

1. The Presentation of your assignments is very important. A well organised assignment reflects your understanding and ability to structure an argument

2. All texts should be the same font size, except Headings and subheadings. Use fonts such as ‘Times New Roman’, ‘Arial’, etc and use fonts of about size 12.

3. When using points, make sure you use points of bullet points

4. Always justify you text

Right Justifyied is:

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All the praises and thanks be to Allâh

Centre Justified is

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All the praises and thanks be to Allâh

Left Justified is

In the Name of Allâh, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. All the praises and thanks be to Allâh

5. Always start your work with Bismillah and Alhamdulilah. It is good practise to do so.

For example:

“Praise be to Allaah, we seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge with Allaah from the evil of our own souls and from our bad deeds. Whomsoever Allaah guides will never be led astray, and whomsoever Allaah leaves astray, no one can guide. I bear witness that there is no god but Allaah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.” [This is part of ‘Khutbah al-Haajah’, as quoted in http://www.islam-qa.com/index.php?ref=2066&ln=eng]

6. Reference all your work.

For example:

a. Shaykh al-Islam said, discussing the state of the person who has gotten used to listening to singing: “Hence you find that those who have gotten used to it and for whom it is like food and drink will never have the desire to listen to the Qur’aan or feel joy when they hear it, and they never find in listening to its verses the same feeling that they find when listening to poetry. Indeed, if they hear the Qur’aan, they hear it with an inattentive heart and talk whilst it is being recited, but if they hear whistling and clapping of hands, they lower their voices and keep still, and pay attention.” [Majmoo’ al-Fataawa, 11/557 ff; as quoted in http://www.islam-qa.com/index.php?ref=5000&ln=eng]

b. The definition of Propaganda is: “Misleading publicity: deceptive or distorted information that is systematically spread.” [http://encarta.msn.com/dictionary_1861736531/propaganda.html]

7. If your references are too big, then try using footnotes or endnotes. These make the work very neat

8. It is encourage quoting full Ayats and ahadeeth. If possible, also add the Arabic.

Please Note: The Dr. Muhsin Khan and Dr. Muhammad al-Hillaali Translation is actually an interpretation (similar to a small Tafseer + translation) and is copyright. So one may use the Arabic, but if you use the English translation, please refer to a copy of the book you have and reference the page, etc.

9. Differentiate between Ayats, Ahadeeth, quotes from scholars and quotes from scholars. Try using colours for this. I normally do it as show below:

Qur’anic Ayat:

“And fight in the way of Allaah and know that Allaah is All – Hearer, All – Knower.” [Interpretation Of The Meaning of The Noble Qur’aan, Part 2, Soorah 2 al – Baqarah, Verse 244; p. 62, 23^rd edition, Small HB, Darussalam publishers, 1998]

Ahadeeth:

Safeeyah reported from Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The Salaah of whoever approaches a fortune-teller and asks him about anything will no be accepted for 40 days.” [Saheeh Muslim, Vol. 4, p. 1211, Number 5540; as quoted in ‘The Clash of the Civilisations – An Islamic View’, by Dr. Aboo Ameenah Bilal Philips, p. 116, al-Hidaayah publishing and distribution, 2007]

Scholarly Quote:

Dr. Muhammad al – Jibaly said, “The angles travel very fast. They travel between the heavens and earth in a short time, bringing down Allaah’s orders, taking up recrds of our deeds, and so on.” [‘Knowing the Angels’, p. 23, 2^nd edition, al – Kitaab and as – Sunnah Publishing, 2007]

You may do it any other way, but you can see how when the differention is clear, it’s easier to read.

10. Always keep it within the word count and add a word count at the end if you can

Name : Dr. Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips (formerly known as Dennis Bradley Philips).

Short Biography :
Dr. Bilal Philips is a Jamaican Canadian Islamic Scholar who was born in a Christian family but converted to Islam in the early seventies from Communism.

About his personal life :
Son of Jamaican parents born on 7th, July, 1947 in Jamaica, he grew up in Canada and lived and studied in Malaysia. He is the father of 20 Muslim children and has a black belt in Tai Kwon Do and currently studies Tai Chi. Among the more notable aspects of his academic life is that he sat in the circles of famous Hadith scholar, Shaikh Naaseer udeen Albani for 4 years in Madinah (1976-1980), as well as the circles of the famous Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Shaikh Ibn Baz in both Madinah and Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He also translated for both Shaikh Ibn Baz and Shaikh Ibn Jibreen on numerous occasions.

Dawah Tips
In the name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Dispenser of Mercy.

    * Start a blog and write about Islam in any language whether in English (a global language) or in your mother tongue, Inshallah it will be more beneficial to write in your native language. Although your blog will be just a drop in the ocean, but small things make differences, believe it or not but it works. And be sure about naming them which attracts non Muslims in special, such as peace, truth, personality development etc. Whether it benefits anybody or not, it will surly benefit you, in getting rewards from Almighty Allah SWT and in increasing your Islamic knowledge, Alhamdulillah it is a universal principle.

    * Visit regularly yahoo answers or similar forum. These are the places where people ask same questions on Islam again and again. Some even asks some serious questions. Answer them because you will never know that maybe be someone get right picture of Islam and accept Islam due to your answers. First of all write a beautiful and error free draft and then post it in forum, don’t use anything contradictory or confusing. Use polite words such as sister\ brother and peace be upon you etc. Don’t write too long article it bores people. And above principle applies here also.

    * Donate Islamic books new and old among Muslims and non Muslims, because there are vast majority of people who seriously wants to seek Islamic knowledge, but due to lack of money, genuine scholars and resources get deprived of authentic Islam.

    * Recommend authentic websites in your emails, web articles etc. Such as Islamreligion.com etc which presents vast variety of articles of common interest.

    * Swap words like namaste or good morning with peace be upon you or Assalam alaikum, God with Allah etc.

    * Use your physical personality for dawah, as it is best way to make people understand what is Islam. Action speaks louder then words. In modern world people have less time to hear but they can see everything, anyway. Girls on hijab and boys with beard or pants above ankles makes people curious about Islam. They will surly ask about hijab and beard, this will be good opportunity to tell them about Islam.

    * Prophet Muhammad PBUH, he is our guiding principle. He spend 40 years before declaring prophet hood in building moral character and spreading love and truth. His whole life is based on love and mercy, of course he is mercy for the worlds. Almighty Allah made love and mercy more powerful weapon to spread truth then any other thing. Call people with love and mercy, greet them salam, take special care of neighbor, fellow passengers etc. In special, talk sweet words with poor, orphans, widows, oppressed, children, handicaps and depressed. Talk people with useful talks, people like talking and often talking solves problems.

    * Use modern invention such as mobile, ipod, computer, internet etc for spreading Islam. Be creative and innovate ideas. Send cards and prepare colorful presentation to spread the truth. Be sure to use authentic references, because it works. Today’s world is awesome, you can learn anything to everything even “learn how to learn”, it is era of research and innovation, you can almost learn anything about everything, use this privilege of Almighty Allah SWT on us to spread Islam.

    * Obey public rules which don’t contradicts with Islam such as No Parking or Do not throw garbage or traffic rules etc whether anybody is watching you or not. This will help them to know that Muslims are disciplined and obedient people, unlike most of people which break public rules and bother others. Avoid doing anything which misrepresent Islam specially in public place, you and me know this fact very well that Islam is the religion of peace and truth, then why misrepresenting it?

    * Gift people Islamic or factual books, audio or video on occasions like birthday, anniversary, festivals etc, which can help them to remember and recognize their creator. Books dealing contemporary Islamic issues are best. If possible present people good tafsir of Quran and sahih hadith in their original language. Make it habit to gift Quran to people on any occasion like marriage etc whether Muslim or non Muslim even to your family members.

    * Use your talents and skill in explaining Islam whether you are doctor, lawyer or accountant. Combine your skills with its Islamic concept. If you are accountant, learn and teach about Islamic finance and so on. Believe and act on islamaization of everything.

Some more points

• Be sure to be pure in intention, if you are non practicing Muslim or cultural Muslim, you dawah is useless for yourself.
• Spread only thing which you yourself inquired about and you are certain about, thing you believe and practice.
• Do not use haram means, ridicules and nonsense to spread Islam. Such as you cannot spread Islam with music.
• Supplicate Almighty Allah about anything to everything halal, because of course we are just His dependents, we cannot create we can only discover which has already been created.
• Obey Allah’s command and follow way of His messenger then only above can benefit us.
• People observe and forget, pain or happiness but Almighty Creator do not forget anything, your slightest effort for his sake will not be wasted, you will get reward on the day of Judgment.
• Do not become like one of them, to make them understand Islam, it will not going to work.
• First priority, preserve your faith then call others to Islam. Almighty Allah has ordered us some priorities, follow them in sequence, and first of all preserve rights of Almighty Allah and then parents and family and hijab and so on.
• Be bold and do not confuse, have faith on Almighty Allah, be daee like Dr Zakir Naik and Shaikh Ahmed Deedat.
• Do not call people to any group or sects; call them to glorious Quran and Prophet’s tradition.
• Be strict in following your religion, weakness in your practicing Islam will adversely affect dawah process.
• Do not imitate them in wrong things this will motivate them in their disbelieve.
• This is not your race with fellow daee, this if your race up to standard that is Quran and sunnah.
• Be regular in dawah.

And Allah knows the best.

1. Proper Islamic upbringing of children.
Children are our future and best among humans are true believers of Islamic monotheism. Therefore we can say children are future of Islam. No society could stand without fellow humans who corporate with one another. Success of human race is Islam. Let’s make our children eligible to take the responsibility of success of human race by teaching them laws of Almighty Allah, both natural and spiritual. This process is neither easy enough to be ignored nor difficult enough to give up.

2. Learning Arabic language.
Believe it or not it is major mistake of contemporary Muslim Ummah, that they do not learn Arabic language in its totality. Almighty creator decided Arabic for His final revelation, by His perfect wisdom. Only Almighty Allah can take best decision for us and he does not want hardship for us, he wants ease for us; only he is the most merciful on his creation.

Can any language really take place of Arabic? No. Around the globe it is conspiracy against Quran to abolish Arabic from non Arabs by anti Islam. But Muslim around the globe should keep it in mind, specially non Arabs, beauty of Quran and Sunnah and thus Islam lies in Arabic, no other language can ever beautify Quran as Arabic do, because Almighty Allah has decided Arabic for Quran and indeed He is the Most Wise, the Most Merciful.

Learn Arabic, it is easy and indeed most beautiful language as you can say lots of things in least number of words. Besides that Arabic is systematic language, it follows simple and common formula in pronunciation, spelling, grammar etc and therefore easy to learn. Learn Arabic to save Quran, to save Islam and to save human.

3. Avoiding cable TV
Television is indeed one of greatest invention of twentieth century. With audio visual aid, TV lays better impact on human brains than any other thing. At the same time, frequent repetition of same thing preserve information in permanent memory. And thus it is tremendous aid in spreading knowledge and education.

But unwise use of anything can be disastrous. All types of shamelessness, crime, ridicules etc became common features of cable TV. In the name of entertainment we are buying downfall of our civilization.

By showing all types of ridicules, advertiser are advertising adultery, murder, breakup of family ties, slander, backbites, nakedness, polytheism, lies and tons and tons of other evils. People learn to believe in and act in unnatural relation between opposite sexes, especially young minds. Besides that, modern cable channels propagate Darwinism and atheism. This leads young Muslim minds to lose their faith.

Not all the TV programs are evil, but most of them are. It is easy to get attracted towards evil then good. Therefore it is always better to say no to cable TV and use TV set according to your own will, not the will of advertisers of evil. Watch prerecorded good programs on VCR or DVD player. It will help in absolute avoidance of evil and pure and clean entertainment and education.

4. Developing love for Islam to avoid temptation of western culture.
Believe it or not in modern world there only exists two cultures, Islamic culture and western culture. Western culture impose ridicules in the name of freedom such as homosexuality, nakedness etc. Most of people living life according to western culture are sufferer of depression, tension, anxiety, suicide etc besides having money, freedom etc.

Islam promotes strong human development both at indivisible and social level, both at mental and physical level, spiritual and material level. We human should have a proper way of life to live happy life. Best thing about Islam is that it is made by the Creator of human beings. Who is going to decide, who has authority to say what is right and what is wrong? Why any other human will decide anything for me? Do you think in such a situation we will ever be able to get pure harmony, I think no. Islam is the standard, created by our Creator, He knows us and our needs and habits; because He has created us and therefore only He can decide best code of life for us.

Essence of Islam is the truth, follow truth what your heart guides you; you will never be satisfied with wrong things. Another best thing about Islam is that Islam stops evil, even before its initial stage. Hijab is its example, Hijab stops adultery and fornication even before its first stage. Surely Islam is the best constitution for us, and if you agree, than enter in it fully and respect it and love it, to compete with temptation build by its rival.

5. Avoiding music, interest, etc which is also haram or forbidden.
As a Muslim we do not consume alcohol and pork because it is prohibited for us by Almighty Allah, then why musical instruments and interest (usury), it is also prohibited. As a Muslim child we are raised in family where our elders do not consume alcohol and pork, but often our elder are involved in transaction of usury or interest, musical filmy song with vulgar lyrics, improper Hijab and thus often our young minds copy their elders in same ill fashion, tell me whom you are worshiping, Almighty Allah or your elders. If you are worshipper of Allah SWT then please resist from all prohibition.

6. Stop wastage of resources.
As a Muslim, we are least involved in wastage of resources, why? Because in Islam there is absolutely no room for wastage of resources, wastage and extravaganza are prohibited in Islam, whether it be festivals or common days. It is obligatory on us, to conserve resources, anything to everything. Therefore, we should fulfill our duty of conservation of resources and take only what is in our absolute need so that other can fulfill their necessities. It will help is abolishing poverty and inequality from face of earth.

7. Tolerating fellow humans.
Intolerance is among one of major problems of contemporary world. Due To lack of tolerance between people, caused wars between countries and civilizations, which results decline of precious human civilization.

8. Following Quran and Sunnah (Prophetic tradition):
Quran is single but best user manual for most complex machine called human and Sunnah i.e, prophetic tradition is best demo for human beings. If we decline to follow our best user manual and best demo, we will fail to become better humans.

9. Avoiding ancestor’s blind following.
Indeed every human errs, so it is better not to follow fallible but follow infallible , i.e. Quran and Sunnah because both of them are divinely guided, the infallible God, Almighty Allah Lord of the worlds, indeed dominion of earth and heavens belong to Allah SWT.

10. Try to combine nature and technology with Islam.
This is yet another problem that Muslim Ummah is not using resources in their best usage. Allah has created various resources for us, so that we can use them for our successful life here and in hereafter. “Surely, O Allah gives us knowledge which is beneficial, resources which is lawful and deeds which are acceptable by you”. May Allah stops us from doing something which He don’t like us to do and may He encourages us to do what He likes us to do.

All the good is from Allah and all mistakes are from Shaytan and myself.

Shaikh Abu Muawiyah Ismail Kamdar began his study of Islam at the age of thirteen. In 2006, he completed a seven year Islamic scholarship at a local Darul Uloom. In his quest for the truth and authentic Islamic knowledge, Shaikh Abu Muawiyah continued studying Islam and sat with scholars from a variety of Madhabs and sects.

His most notable teacher is Dr Abu Ameenah Bilal Philips. Shaikh Abu Muawiyah served as an Arabic and Islamic Studies Educator at Ihsaan Boys College is Durban, South Africa in 2008, and as an English and Social Studies Educator at the Al-Fajr International School in Chennai, India for part of 2009.

Shaikh Abu Muawiyah currently resides in Durban, South Africa and serves as an Arabic Tutor for Deenclass, an associate writer for Muslim Matters and as a Tutorial Assistant in Tafseer, Fiqh and Arabic for the Islamic Online University. He also appears regularly on Radio Al-Ansar and Channel Islam International.
